Influenced by the cool aesthetics of the 1980s in the style of Depeche Mode or Ultravox and the narrative depth of dark wave greats such as Nick Cave, Die Kammer creates a soundtrack for dancing on the volcano, inviting listeners both to pause and to dive into a hypnotic trance. Testory and Ambré call this bittersweet state “positive melancholy”: a sadness that does not paralyse, but liberates.

Minimalist clarity runs just as consistently through the eleven tracks of the new album as the fusion of supposed contradictions. Die Kammer recognises the looming end – and decides, precisely for that reason, to celebrate life with head held high. The title track “We Destroy What We Love” dissects the painful paradox of sabotaging precisely what means the most to us. The wistful counterpoint is “Sweet Uncertainty”, a nostalgic hymn to youthful exuberance and the naive feeling of immortality. In contrast, “Poisoned River” describes the end of all childlike bliss. “The Fall of the Sun”even paints a picture of an orgiastic end-of-the-world ceremony.

Marcus Testory and Matthias Ambré prove with this album that reduction does not mean emptiness. Those who explore Die Kammer will find space for that inner voice that is often lost in the clamour of everyday life. Season VI: We Destroy What We Love is thus far more than the mere continuation of a band’s history; it is an anchor, a manifesto for depth in a superficial age.
